How to Get a Black Dragon in Dragonkind

The strongest current Black-dragon evidence points to a rare shadow branch — but the branch itself appears luck-based and the final encounter can still fail.

Quick answer

There is currently no guaranteed way to get a Black dragon. The strongest community pattern is a rare third “shadow” option on the tree route: players report meeting a Blue first and, if they do not bond it, sometimes continuing to a Black encounter. Whether that rare option appears is itself random.

Best current route evidence

  • Reach the tree-route family rather than treating earlier social choices as the deciding factor.
  • Watch for a rare third option involving a shadow when you are in the tree.
  • Community reports say this branch can reveal a Blue encounter first.
  • Some players who continue past the Blue report reaching a Black encounter.
  • The Black encounter can still end in death rather than a bond.

What is not supported

ClaimCurrent evidence
A specific wing/squad guarantees BlackNot supported by current mapping
One personality answer sequence guarantees BlackNot supported; repeat outcomes vary
Low phone battery increases Black oddsUnconfirmed rumor; no reliable evidence
Seeing the shadow guarantees a Black bondFalse; the branch can include Blue and can still end in death

Why persistence matters more than a perfect answer sheet

Rare-branch testers describe many attempts before seeing the shadow option. The practical strategy is therefore to aim for a route family that can expose the rare branch, stop treating ordinary color encounters as proof you chose “wrong,” and expect to retry.

No guaranteed Black path

The current r/fourthwing Dragonkind megathread explicitly states there is no specific way to get Black or Blue and that luck/randomness is involved.

FAQ

Does the shadow option always appear?
No. Players testing rare-dragon paths describe the shadow as a luck-based third option that may not appear on a run.
Can I die after finding a Black dragon?
Yes. Reaching a rare encounter does not guarantee a successful bond.
